About this service

About Our Service

Sebaceous cysts are common, non-cancerous lumps that develop when sebaceous glands become blocked, typically appearing on the face, neck, or torso. These cysts often grow slowly and are painless, though they can sometimes discharge a greyish-white, foul-smelling material. Learn more about cysts in our detailed guide on cyst removal.

We offer safe and precise removal of sebaceous cysts, tailored to your individual needs. Although based in Edinburgh, we regularly treat patients from Fife and surrounding areas, including St Andrews, Kirkcaldy, and Dunfermline, who seek prompt access to expert-led care. Our approach prioritises careful removal with the best possible cosmetic outcome, ensuring minimal scarring. During your personalised consultation, we’ll assess the cyst and recommend the most suitable treatment option—helping you make an informed decision with confidence.

Treatment methods

Cyst Treatment Options

We offer specialist private treatment for sebaceous cysts, serving Fife patients from our Edinburgh-based clinic. Our expert-led approach is tailored to each individual, ensuring both effective removal and consideration of cosmetic outcomes.

Observation. For small, symptom-free cysts, we may recommend monitoring for any changes rather than immediate treatment.

Incision and Drainage. This procedure offers quick relief for painful, swollen cysts by draining the contents. However, as the cyst sac remains, there's a higher chance of recurrence.

Surgical Excision. For a more permanent solution, the entire cyst, including its sac, is surgically removed, greatly reducing the likelihood of recurrence. This is performed under local anaesthesia.

Antibiotics. If the cyst is infected, antibiotics may be prescribed to treat the infection, although this won’t remove the cyst itself.
