Mole Treatment Options

We offer two private mole removal options tailored to meet the unique needs of our patients and strive for both optimal medical outcomes and aesthetic excellence.

Your safety and cosmetic goals are paramount. During your initial consultation at the Edinburgh Waterfront Private Hospital, we’ll carefully examine your mole and suggest the most appropriate removal strategy based on its size, type, location, your skin type, and personal preferences. If preferred, we may be able to remove the mole immediately, avoiding the need for a repeat appointment.

We also emphasise the importance of post-procedure care to promote proper healing and reduce scarring, ensuring that you receive the highest standard of care and the best possible results in mole removal. Learn more about various mole treatment options in our comprehensive guide on moles.

Surgical Excision. Ideal for larger moles or those requiring a biopsy, this method involves surgically removing the mole along with a margin of surrounding tissue. The site is then stitched closed. Every excision leaves a scar. We aim to minimise its visibility through careful incision placement and closure, and most scars fade considerably over 6–12 months. Removed tissue is routinely sent for histological analysis, which is included in the procedure price.

Shave Excision. Suitable for protruding moles, this technique involves shaving the mole level with the skin surface, usually resulting in a less noticeable scar. It's particularly effective for moles that stand out from the skin's surface.

Frequently asked

Frequently Asked Questions: Mole Removal

Q&A

01 What is mole removal surgery?

Mole removal surgery is a medical procedure that targets the removal of moles which are unsightly, irritating, or could potentially be precancerous. It generally involves either shaving the mole off or fully excising it, sometimes requiring sutures afterward.

02 How to remove moles?

Two primary techniques are employed for mole removal: - **Shave Excision:** This method involves carefully shaving the mole off from the surface of the skin. - **Full Excision:** In this approach, the mole along with a margin of surrounding skin is completely removed and the area is sutured.

03 How much is mole removal?

The cost of mole removal depends on the method used: - **Shave Removal**: from £595 – This technique is suitable for raised moles and involves shaving the mole down to skin level. - **Full Excision**: from £795 – This method is recommended for larger or deeper moles and includes surgical removal with a small margin of healthy skin. - **Pathology analysis**: included in the treatment price, where the mole is sent for examination to confirm it is benign. During your consultation, our plastic surgeon will assess your mole and discuss the most appropriate treatment option, along with a full breakdown of costs.

04 What are the potential risks of mole removal?

Risks associated with mole removal are minimal but can include scarring, infection, or an allergic reaction to anaesthesia. Medical teams take extensive precautions to minimise these risks.

05 Will there be scarring post-mole removal?

Scarring varies based on the mole’s size, location, and the method used for its removal. Plastic surgeons aim to achieve the best possible cosmetic outcomes, especially in sensitive areas and give advice on how to minimise scarring after your treatment.

06 How long does the mole removal procedure take?

This procedure typically lasts less than 30 minutes and is usually performed at the same time as your consultation if you so wish.

07 Is mole removal painful?

Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area and minimise discomfort during the procedure.

08 What is the recovery time after mole removal?

Patients can usually return to their daily activities immediately after the procedure, although those with larger or more sensitively located moles may need to rest for a few days.

09 When should I consider mole removal?

Moles that change in size, shape, or colour, or that cause bleeding, itching, or pain should be evaluated by a professional. Cosmetic removal is also an option.

10 How is the mole analysed after removal?

Removed tissue is routinely sent for histological analysis, which is included in the procedure price. The results help determine any follow-up treatment if necessary.

11 How do I choose between shave removal and full removal?

The decision between shave excision and full excision usually depends on the mole’s characteristics and your personal cosmetic concerns. Protruding moles usually are suited best to shave excision. We will discuss the best option during a consultation.

12 What should I expect in terms of aftercare and healing?

Post-operative care involves keeping the area clean and dry and applying any prescribed ointments we give you. Healing time varies by the location of the wound but usually occurs within 14 days. We will arrange any necessary follow up as part of your package.

13 Can mole regrow after removal?

There is a small chance of a mole regrowing, especially if not all the mole cells were removed during surgery. Complete removal minimises this risk.

14 How to remove moles at home?

We advise against at-home mole removal methods, as they can lead to infection, scarring, or incomplete removal. Instead, we provide safe and effective excision or shave techniques to ensure optimal cosmetic results.

15 How can I get moles removed?

To have a mole removed, book a consultation with our plastic surgeon. During the appointment, your mole will be examined, treatment options discussed, and the procedure carried out at the same time if you wish.

16 How to get moles removed from face?

Removing moles from the face requires precise techniques to ensure safety and the best cosmetic results. Our plastic surgeon specialises in **excision** and **shave removal** techniques, tailored to minimise scarring and blend seamlessly with your skin. During a consultation, the mole’s type and size will be assessed, and the most appropriate removal method will be recommended. The procedure is quick, performed under local anaesthesia, and includes aftercare guidance for optimal healing.

17 How to get rid of moles on skin?

The safest way to get rid of moles on your skin is through professional procedures performed by a qualified surgeon. Our plastic surgeon offers two effective methods: 1. **Excision**: The mole is surgically removed with a small margin of healthy skin to ensure complete removal. 2. **Shave Removal**: The mole is shaved down to the level of the surrounding skin, ideal for raised or superficial moles. Both methods are minimally invasive and designed with careful closure, aiming to achieve the best cosmetic result possible for your skin and the lesion's location. Avoid at-home remedies, as they can lead to complications such as infection or incomplete removal.
